Hydroponics—more than just a word

The idea of cultivating plants without soil must have been intriguing back in 19th century—“You kidding me?” somebody must have snapped at Francis Bacon (one of the first proponents of this branch of agronomy). The idea first came into being when scientists found out that soil is just a carrier of nutrients required for the plant, rest is history. We know now that we can grow almost any kind of plant with Hydroponics.

The advantages of hydroponics go beyond the elimination of soil for cultivation; using hydroponics essentially means:

  • Less water costs
  • Lower nutrition costs
  • Guaranteed and timely yields
  • No environment pollution
  • No weeds
  • Less Labor costs

….being some of them.

Not only is Hydroponics a profitable undertaking, we can easily say that it is of great benefit to humanity. People living in crowded and busy places, people living in “tough” climatic conditions can grow fresh vegetables and other crops over rooftops.

Commercially, Hydroponics is practiced in US and few other developed nations, but efforts are made in the same direction to create awareness among other areas of the world. Hydroponics is an integrated part of agronomy and is a continuous subject of study in biology.
