looking good cannot be undervalued, especially if “we” are average. looking good is perhaps the most “relative” thing in this world, “relativeness” (a stare at generalizing) still does’nt cancel how good we are being looked upon ( i owe this to reading a lot ).
First impressions are always (almost) wrong, but we still cannot undermine its importance in giving a chance to the second impressions in the first place. As it is relative, the first chance may be given by usefulness(outer) and aesthetic sense in case of “non-living” objects and a variety of things + physically looking good when it comes to human beings.
Looking good makes way for “appearing to be good” , esp. in current society and has various implications. Looking good can mean pretending something we are not, trying to present something in more exaggerating manner, just being something more than we are as and when situation demands it. It starts from a simple answer to a question asked in university exam to a high level job interview, but unless we have something that is way above average, we will be cheating ourselves of something good if we dont “look” good (of course we dont need to be outstanding to pass the exam).
How important it is to look good again is highly relative, even varies from person to person apart from profession to profession, situation to situation, and time to time (really gave away a chance to say this to this , this to that and yes, that to this). Lot of times the importance of “lk” is attributed to cities, cultures and at a small level to groups and sometimes forces which are almost obscure and ignored (the mis world concept) , but there is always an air of its importance which can very easily be detected.
At times, Its not enough to be good, how the hell are we supposed to know that somebody is good? that leaves too much of work for somebody. The famous (only for few) Nick Drake is still not known because he never did too many shows, was reluctant to record (attributed to disorder they say), result-(how damn can i talk about the result). Relationships is another classic case-Maximum number of people are unhappy with eachother on the basis what one “shows”, not what one “is”. What should be and what not be is an endless debate.
Saying that however, there are advantages of not being able to “lk” because then we would try hard and become “really” good at something. Apart from that we can exploit the system (while it continues to be what it is) and hide our weaknesses (not a bad thing really) and appear to be really good (which comes naturally to a lot and very difficult for some of us). Becoming something good is not easy , but necessarily doesnt mean that we should not keep upto the “minimum” “appearing” levels of “lk” which may be required of us( in some levels at various times). We cannot give more importance to it also, otherwise the entire world would have been into fashion, art (really?) and similar such things. It is also true that people will become smart (as there will be more and more competition) and know that these “looking good’s” are not good enough.
Another shade of looking good is something intrinsic to mankind (thats what i read and observe ), that we do want to look good (be wanted, be looked upon ,be powerful).May be the two things are related , its just that the former is predominant right now. The way out can be being among the people/groups(according to levels of u know what) one may think will hold a better future, but downplaying its importance is not advisable. I have tried to as objective as possible when writing this, but the brackets may not have been enough.
This page will be in google’s banned list of pages if i dont name it looking good, wont look good, will it?
